First Stage Performance

She made all our speculations wrong. We parents assumed that their daughter is dancing for the tunes of 'Senorita' as she remembered all the steps flawlessly.

After few days we had a doubt as she said its a Japanese dance that she's been dancing for. With confusion and excitement we waited for the final day.

Dressed in a pink and peach Japanese robe(as it looked so), straws pinned up on the hair and a hand fan; she finally turned up on the stage. She looked very tiny amidst other peers and she became almost invisible while turning and concentrating on her steps and song.

She perfectly tuned her body to the harp music that played in the background. By the time her teacher realised that she was not visible and pushed her front the music stopped and everyone applauded:)

She finds immense comfort in holding my arms while sleeping.

Though, she takes a lot of topsy- turvy turns before she rediscovers her particular point of consolation each time.

Finally, when she does find solace either on my cheeks or elbows and presses her warm palms against them to go into her dreamy world, I too sleep like a baby.

She perfectly placed an apple infront of the fire to heat it. The reason: her mother had explained her not to eat it soon after taking it out from the refrigerator and to wait till it's almost back to room temperature.

She scolded me for throwing away her cut nails as she thought that the nails would get hurt and start crying if done so.

Desire of growing up

Anvitha has been eyeing on my high heeled sandals (which i bought after so many years). She is not even three years and she wants to wear a 3 inch heeled sandals. I explained her that she has to grow up to wear them. Now, because of that, she wants to grow up fast. She is ready to drink her milk and eat food to become big and strong- the result would be growing up fast so that she would try on all her mother’s belongings ranging from fancy ear-rings to sarees to cosmetics to sandals.

There was a time when I too wanted to grow up fast and study in college because I thought all the people who went to college enjoyed and had a great life. Never did I realise the responsibility that came with growing up. My daughter too will realise it one day but then she would be a grown up girl.

The colour Pink has become a synonym for Anvitha now.
She thinks whatever is in pink colour has to her sole property.
She has a array of things in that colour- dress, toys, shoes, bangles, hairbrush, watch, glasses, her kitchen set, umbrella etc etc.,
Though it's her favourite colour she always says it as 'Blue'. So need to understand that whenever she utters Blue it's ought to be 'Pink'.
This colour swapping has come down considerably now, her love (or rather obsession) for pink objects remains intact.

'My friend Ganesha'

It all started with her Bal Ganesh movie...
She must have watched the movie hundred times by now.
She utters a few of the dialogues too.
Bal Ganesh, mooshik (mouse), modak, Nandi are all her friends.
Her love for him grew even more when her 'doddappa' bought her a 'Bal Ganesh' doll.
She has played with the doll, worshipped him, has had endless conversations with him.

The idol that was brought during Ganesh Chaturthi became her new Ganesha.
She hugged him and photographed herself with him, when brought home.
On the day of immersion she was all told and prepared by her dad that her beloved Ganesha would go to a swimming pool that day and would not come back.
She was indeed very excited to see her Ganesha taking a dip in the water.
She jumped with excitement while going to the lake shouting 'Ganapathi bappa moraya'.
But it was after the immersion, that she realised her friend had left her.
She cried unconsolably for almost an hour asking him to come back.

At present she is happy with her Ganesha doll and is back to her playtime with him.

Learning shapes

Circle, square, triangle, oval, diamond and star...these are the shapes she has started recognizing without any difficulty.
She has rather started generalizing these shapes in her daily activities.
The plate in which she eats is round, the TV she watches is square (though she cannot differentiate between square and rectangle), the road safety signboards are pictured on a triangle board, the rice grain she eats and the seed of the date fruit she eats is indeed oval in shape...
I was cutting cucumber the other day in circles and she said 'that's a circle'. Later, i cut them into sticks and chopped them.
'Now they have turned into squares' she remarked. I was impressed.

This is how learning should proceed...from knowing specific concepts to applying them to daily life.

Becoming Bilingual

Anvitha's ಅಮ್ಮ has been replaced by 'mummy' while her ಅಪ್ಪ has become 'papa'.
Yes! she has started speaking in English now(mostly the influence of her school).
Her most favourite sentence is 'Mummy, i want water'.
The other words and sentences are hailed from her school and her interactions with her class teacher.
For e.g., 'Ma'am what is that?', 'Don't touch', and 'Don't talk'.
There are times when her English language follows the rule of Sanskrit language that of free usage of words in a sentence without any sequencing.
Just an e.g., 'Papa, where is?'
It's not just the transition from Kannada to English but to Hindi as well especially her Hindi rhymes learnt at school.
Though very hard, I have learned the art of deciphering her rhymes learnt at school.

It is of course necessary that she learn English but when she utters those precious words ( ಅಮ್ಮ and ಅಪ್ಪ) in English there is a pang in both me and S's stomach.

Me and S are having a tough time figuring out the reason behind Anvitha's temper tantrums these days...
Is it because of lack of sleep (as she has to get up early to go to school) or just a passing time, i do not know.
But her uncontrollable behaviour and outrage forces me to think that the reason behind all this is her school environment.
She is still missing her old school and refuses to go to her new one.
Is she putting out all this frustration at home?
Hopefully she will change once her grandparents are here (whose arrival she is waiting so eagerly).

When first Anvita started learning her rhymes she intently watched her Rhyme CDs and listened to me singing for her.
Once she caught hold of that, she understood a few words and would sing along.
The next step for her was listening just the music and then recognising the respective songs for the tune (which is admirable).
Now, that she has learnt both she wants to put her own words into those song tunes which i think is a bad idea. That's because, this nuisance I need to bear all the time.
From past 2 days she is learning 'Jana gana mana' at school. Hope the National anthem doesn't get remixed and Rabindranath Tagore's glory is preserved.

How easily these children can sense the subtleties of human behaviour change:either good or bad.
Now, that Anvitha is going to her new school she is missing her old school extremely.
Is it the environment or the handling of children at new school or the way they are treated i and S do not know. But she is just not ready for it.
When she attended Daksha she had loads of stories to narrate.
We, parents never asked the school authorities what is being taught to her?
But we saw the live result of their teaching at home, in her way of spontaneous reproduction of everything that she had learnt.
They managed to give attention to each details of a child's routine.
This new place seems to be chaotic for her and she seems to be lost.
I only hope this would change as a little time passes.
But i also wish we hadn't shifted her from Daksha.

I think this 2+ yrs is the most toughest period handling her.
She understands many things and at the same time she 'doesn't understand' many other things related to them.
The end result being TANTRUMS.
I seem to be loosing patience so many times yet she makes me laugh immediately with her cute reactions and consolations:)
The most unbearable yet adorable behaviour is her 'incessant talk' for the whole day (even while she is having her food for which i need to remind her that she has to chew her food and not talk).

Open House

Open House is Daksha's way of conducting so called 'exams' for preschoolers.
All the materials taught for the kids were neatly arranged in a room and we parents were the examiners who were free to ask anything.
Nowhere did the teachers make their presence felt (their way of getting natural responses from children without any fear).
Just a week ago Anvitha was crying to go to school and now she even faced her exams!!!
And the best part: Nobody even knew that it's her exam.

Now, that after a week she has completely settled down in her school (though she cribs about it while leaving home and enjoys once she enters) it's the school stories that i should be listening and training myself to be heard.

The rhymes and music sessions, the activities of her classroom, and her snack menu are the main topics for discussion.

But after all this, when she is asked as to what she did at school the first thing she says is that "she cried".

Day(s) out at play school

Anvitha has been attending play school since last week and seems really enthusiastic to play her favourite games there. Of course, that's only if her mother is alongside!!!
Even while playing her much adored slide or sand she wants me standing next to her.
Day before yesterday I was told go out for at least half an hour but her teacher called me back within 10 minutes as she was sobbing uncontrollably.
Every night while going to sleep she shows her interest to go to school next day and she doesn't forget to add about her favourite snacks also being served there (which she wouldn't even try if prepared at home) which she savours to the last bite.

Hope she understands soon that her mother can't be with her all the time.

Devotion

I have never been a beleiver of God. But my girl seems to be my opposite.
Though it is difficult to say about the 'belief' part at this age but the 'ritual' part she performs without any mistakes and inhibitions.
I too am forced to perform those rituals which i wouldn't do otherwise.
The best example would be our 'daily' visit to the temple. I never go to temples until and unless i am asked by someone.
But for Anvitha a visit to the temple during our daily evening walks is a must.
Joining her palms for 'namaskaar', taking 'teertha','aarti' and 'prasada', performing the 'pradakshina'- everything has to be perfect for her.
Recently she has learned to do her pradakshina not only in the temple but around the 'tulsi' plant too.
She doesn't miss out on chanting of 'mantras' while doing all this.
Though in her own language mantras are a new addition to her practices.
All in all she's carefully practicing my part of the rituals too.

Apart from the usual English rhymes Anvitha's been learning a few old Kannada rhymes too and i think she loves them more than her English rhymes.
Her latest favourites are 'ಆಚೆ ಮನೆ ಸುಬ್ಬಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ' and 'ರೊಟ್ಟಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಕಿಟ್ಟಪ್ಪ '. The former, she can sing complete chorus and the latter, only two lines.

Other than these rhymes, she has also learnt 'ಸ ನಿ ದ ಪ ' of karnatic music from her neighbourhood class where she makes her presence every now and then. Then too, she would want a book infront of her to guide her(!!!!) and her position should be cross legged while her palms play the 'ತಾಳ'.

Symbolic and Pretend Play

Symbolic Play refers to symbolic, or dramatic, play which occurs when children begin to substitute one object for another.
Which predominantly starts after 2 years.
And I can definitely see my girl doing the symbolic play.
Her car remote can become her TV, a plate and spoon can serve as her drums at one time and my turn into her 'aarti' plate at other times.
She has learned to feed, comb and even toilet train her favourite doll.
I had learnt in psychology that symbolic play is very important in a child's development.
It not only enriches their imagination but this is how they start relating to the outer world.
And even more, it also develops the child's language abilities as they do lot of 'self talking' when they actually communicating with their toys.

Story Telling

It's story telling time these days!!!
I was wondering if this is the righttime to start telling storiesftro her as i was apprehensive about her comprehension abilities.
But she surprised me by understanding and re-telling the story in her own language.
At first, i told nearly three stories and asked her a few questions about the story and she answered them all.
These days, she takes the initiative to either tell stories by herself or she will express her choice for a story.
Of course, i have to modify the characters in the story a bit (as for example: In the story The Fox and the grapes, the fox will become a dog as she doesn't know what's a fox) but who cares.
And at times, two or three stories get mixed up and some real life instances which she remembers creeps into the story.
But even then, whatever she tells is a STORY.

Birthday preparations

Anvitha's second birthday celebration preparations have started.
As we could not celebrate her very first birthday last year, this year we thought of making some preparations.
Moreover, through her favourite rhyme video 'Happy Birthday to you' and looking at the only photo of her last year's birthday she wants her 'Happy to you'(her way of saying it) everyday. And we are forced to tell her that it's on the next morning.
For the event, as we went ordering the cake and shopping for a dress, both me and S had a discussion about our birthday celebrations and the age at which we first cut our the sooo called 'birthday cakes'.
That was probably at the age of 25 we saw ourselves blowing the candle and cutting the cake. Even then our elders would scold us for blowing the candles out as they said those lights should burn till the end:)
Even more amusing sight for me during her dress selection was 'me taking her to the trial room to try on different outfits and the way she would come out to show them off to her father!'
These trial rooms too we hadn't seen till we entered these metro cities.
Whatever it is, only thing I wish is that she should learn to know the value of money and the hard work that goes in to earn it.

Our growing friendship

There are lot of things these days which me and my daughter enjoy doing together: dancing to some of our favourite beats, acting crazy at times, our evening walks, daily visits to her favourite temple, our story telling session and more importantly both sharing and enjoying our chocolate bars:)
And thus, there seems to be another relationship forming apart from just mother and daughter: friendship.
Of course, we do have our times of tantrums but both of us have learned to make up after the fight.

...It starts at around 8'0 clock in the morning and closes at around 10 in the night:
talking is what she does the whole day. Observing, repeating, gesturing, imitating, lip-reading and whole lot of other modes of communication comes out to convey her messages. She has even learned to address her grandfather by his name rather than calling him 'ajja'. And her mom has become 'amma shuti'. Talking to her favourite doll, talking over the phone, saying prayers (which is mostly 'Om Anvita':), repeating letters of the alphabet and numbers(her new amusement); everything is a part of her language learning routine now.

Understanding pain

The cry of the infants when they are in pain is completely different from how they would cry when they are hungry or bored.
By the time they turn 2 years, at least they can verbalise as to what pain they are undergoing.
They can even start understanding the pain of others, especially of their parents.
Of course, not the kind of pain that they inflict on us while they are playing pranks on us such as pulling hair or biting or pinching but the real pain which one undergoes when someone is not well.
Anvitha can clearly make out when either me or S is in pain and it hurts her as though she herself is in pain.
When I underwent surgery, she completely understood that her mom was not well and transformed her own self not to trouble others.
And when, I stopped lifting her because of the surgery...she silently obeyed by not asking me to carry her.
Recently, when I tried to carry her (first time after two months) the first words she said was 'Amma abbu' (abbu means pain).
Now, each time I try to lift her (which I seldom do) she repeats the same words.

It's been 5 days since I saw her and may be one more day will go by so...

Aaha.... and a broad smile is what the expression Anvitha gives whenever we understand her language successfully.
Though me and S have learnt a lot of 'her words' and 'her language', sometimes we miss out especailly when she has learnt a new word and we are unaware of it.
We can easily make out through her facial expressions if we are deciphering her correctly or not.
When ultimately we decode her language, her joy is boundless.

Sometimes it's funny how Anvitha understands the language- literally.
If I ask her to sit, she will sit promptly but doesn't realise if that is a place to sit; she will sit wherever she is.
If I ask her to close her eyes while going to sleep, she has to put her palms against her eyes to shut them. She doesn't understand that eyes can be closed just like that:)

Looking at the open sky; walking bare foot on the vast fields; watching the first rain in awe and happiness; streching the arms to hold onto the rain water; sneaking the fingers through the soil and playing with it; soaking the body in easily available water; eating fresh guava coming directly from the trees; taking a stroll midst banana and arecaunut trees; plucking the flowers; listening to the singing birds; running behind the "meow", "bou-bou" and "amba"; at the same time, learning to speak the language of grownups by babbling her own dialect , ...all this and much more. My girl has had a time (away from city) that was never so carefree and gay.

Busy always

My daughter is more busy than usual these days.
Helping her grandparents in packing things, misplacing them, reorganising them and finally unpacking the packed items before it reaches its destination!
I am more happy for her being sooooo busy because the result is "she falls asleep in minutes and wakes up only once in between".
I only hope this continues even after returning home.

No complaints and no grudges

Few days back Anvitha fell down from the cot (i still do not know if she actually fell down or came down by herself).
I felt miserable and guilty about as i knew it was my fault.
Yet there was no way and means for her to say 'amma you made me fall down'.

There are times when i am tired and frustrated at night when she refuses to sleep: i shout at her and a give beating too now and then.
Even then, the next day when she wakes up she gives me such a true smile and a hug!

She keeps no grudge against me and doesn't complain when i am at wrong but i shout for no fault of hers.

Every time i put Anvitha to sleep there starts all kinds of noises from all across this apartment.
My neighbour starts grinding something, the person staying in the next level starts repairing something, the maid in one more apartment starts washing clothes etc etc.,
And this whole process doesn't happen just a day or two but everyday!!!
She being a light sleeper wakes up instantly.

Fourteen months and many things have been learnt...

-To carry her favourite doll and mobile phone for her music to be played when she is sleepy...

-To look at the sky when asked to show pigeons...

-And finally to make us understand that she has grown up and a 'KID' anymore.

Socialisation

Children learn fast when left among their age mates...
No matter how great an effort adult puts in to teach the child, it is best learnt amongst their peers...
'A' copied, or in fact became sure of her 'walking' while she watched her cousin (of her age) who had already mastered that action. She would put more firm steps which otherwise would tremble.
She in turn showed and taught her cousin a few actions of her amusement.
Kids also show more confidence and expressions when they are with many people than just mother and father.
This i learnt when she was taken to her grand parents'.
She became more expressive and she learned things quickly.
I had just heard positive things about socialisation but never really realised the importance of it.
Even when 'S' had told me that he would like to have more people(at least grandparents) around his daughter i hadn't paid much attention but people like me believe only after seeing...
Now i know how much socialisation can contribute to a person's growth and development, especially during early years.

Parenting is both difficult and scary job...
Scary especially when it comes to children's health...
Anvita has fever since last week and it's so hard to see her being so low and inactive- that too on her first birthday...
When she was fit and fine, i wanted her to sit for some time at some place so that i could relax....
But now,that she sits at one place and sleeps more than usual it's even more hard to see her this way...
Both ways parents are being tested...

I always try to teach in my own way because teaching in the right way from the beginning would be better than changing it later (that's what i had studied)...
But meanwhile, i realized i can't make her do so always...
Sometimes i need to go her way and try learning her way of doing things so that she will slowly follow me...
Now i know i shouldn't push her too hard while dealing with her...

Everyday i crib that she doesn't eat properly...
But a sudden insight creeped my mind-"when we like variety in our food why can't she have it"...
Of course eating the same food types everyday bored her...
So now, i change her menu everyday...

While i worked at the special school i held the parents responsible for all their children's misbehaviour...
But now i know how easy it is to overlook your child's misbehaviour and consider it as right as you love you child so much...
How easily children find out these things from their parents and blackmail them...
In the course of time it's difficult to judge who is teaching whom- whether you are teaching your child or the child teaching you...

Good and Bad...

Good- Eating leftover cerelac...
Bad- Drinking leftover milk...

Good- Watching her do all the pranks...
Bad- Cleaning it up...

Good- .Happiness of watching her smile and play...
Bad- Frustration that comes in when she cries...

Good- Make her watch TV when i have loads of work to finish...
Bad- Turning off the TV myself(when i have my favourite programme) to avoid her becoming addicted to it...

Good- Taking her for walk to make her watch and laugh at the kids play...
Bad- Backache which i get because of carrying her...

Big booming buzzing confusion

I have been wanting to post this blog since she was two months old but hadn't had the time to do so....
Now she has turned seven months but i don't think it's too late to write anything about her...
Then, whenever i looked at her I remembered the words of a very famous developmental psychologist- Jean Piaget who said 'a child's world is big booming buzzing confusion'...
To me, she always semmed likek asking so many questions- 'Where am I?' Why am I here? Who are all these people? Why do they keep loking at me?
But as she grew her face looked less confusing and now, at 7 months she seems more smart than us...

Weird are the things which amuse children- a rotating ceiling fan, the sound of rattles, the singing Santa Claus, moving vehicles, bright colours, flashing TV lights, balloons, rolling on the floor with the blanket covered on the whole face, fluttering of the curtains, songs of Kannada TV serials (as my daughter doesn't respond to Hindi TV serial songs), watching the other children play, watching the laptop screen, touching the blender, the noise of papers, ringing phone and the list goes on.....

Fair and flawless skin...
Long arms and legs carved to perfection...
Tiny fingers curling up with the slightest touch...
Toes which reminds me of the famous ONIDA tv ad 'neighbour's envy, owner's pride'...
Wide open sparkling eyes which look like that of a wax doll...
This little wonder of nature made more beautiful with the touch of minutest details such as the fingernails- always teasing the onlooker 'see my nails are ever manicured'...
Those long eye lashes carefully placed on the eyes...
Not to forget the dimple on the chin which mock me and tell all the time 'am dad's little girl'...

All this and much more make my little one an angel on earth...
Do not know whether i should be proud to call her 'my daughter' or the mother nature who created her...
